Gartner defines Business Intelligence (BI) as “an umbrella term that includes the applications, infrastructure and tools, and best practices that enable access to and analysis of information to improve and optimise decisions and performance”.

To put it simply, BI transforms important data into actionable actions. BI doesn’t tell you what you need to do to improve your business; it tells you exactly what has and is happening within your organisation, helping your company’s top management make the best (informed) decisions for your business.

Business Intelligence is not the same as Business Analytics (BA), but they go hand in hand. BA is a technology-aided process by which a software analyses data in both a predictive and prescriptive manner.

Many organisations today can rely on their ERP software to help them transform their BA into BI. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant report lists the best vendors with their characteristics every year, and Unit4 is one of them.

ERP systems have always provided valuable levels of data gathering and reporting. When choosing the best ERP solution that will help you boost your BI, you need to be aware that not all the software available in the market provides an adequate analysis of the data, leaving you with only the BA.

It is important for companies to understand how information is gathered by the software and how that data can be used to make meaningful decisions. Integrated software solutions that establish relationships and share data with the different departments and roles in the organisations are key for Business Intelligence.

Business Intelligence is the future of any business. Being able to transform raw data into meaningful data that will help you improve your company’s operations and business performance is the ultimate goal.
